Greece - Crete -Akrotiri

Akrotiri is not just a beautiful place to vacation in Crete. Akrotiri is an incredibly beautiful piece of history, with excavations of what is lovingly called the “Greek Pompeii” taking center stage in the unearthing of a piece of history.  These beautiful ruins at Akrotiri (which is in the northwestern region of Crete) are worth the time to view on your vacation in Crete.

There are many resorts surrounding the ancient site of Akrotiri, all breathtakingly beautiful.  Caldera View Resort is located just outside Akrotiri, while the Blue Beach Holiday Resort is within Akrotiri’s borders.  The Caldera View Resort offers spacious grounds, beautiful buildings, and a huge pool at the center of the compound.  This resort features a restaurant fashioned out of lava rock in the ancient way as well as luxurious suites.  The Blue Beach Holiday Resort has apartments instead of suites, ranging from studios to four bedroom affairs.  These apartments are nestled in charming two-story buildings that stand alone throughout the spacious resort grounds.  No two buildings are exactly alike, but they are all surrounded by the flowers and gardens of the expansive grounds.  This resort features a small market, a pool, a playground, a taverna, and freshly caught fish once a week.

There are many other resorts in the area as well, all with their unique styles and charms and each with many of the same wonderful amenities.  Options include the Perle Resort Hotel and Spa, the Akrotiri Beach Hotel, the Vedema Resort, and more.  Each strives to introduce you to Greek culture and tradition in their own unique way, helping you to experience Crete to the fullest.

While many of these resorts offer amenities for children, the ruins and places historical significance are likely to be lost on most young children.  Older children with an interest in paleontology might find this area to be of far more interest than a family with young children or a young couple looking for romance and excitement.  The main attraction of the area is the site of the ruins itself, excavated within the last couple of centuries after it was buried in the ash of an exploding volcano ages ago.  Of equal interest is the ancient monastery, which sits on the highest point on the island and provides breathtaking views along with fascinating historical interest.  The day can be finished up with a wine tasting at a local vineyard or a relaxing couple of hours on the beach before retiring to your luxurious resort for the night.
