Greece - Crete - Apokoronas
Apokoronas, can be found in the north-east corner of the Chania prefecture, is on the northern coast of the island of Crete. It is situated between Hania and Rethymnon. Found in the shadow of the majestic White Mountains (Lefka Ori), Apokoronas can definitely be described as a natural location. This area is full of green regions, sandy beaches and breathtaking views.
There are many interesting sights in the district of Apokoronas. One is the island of Crete’s only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas. Found 3 km inland from the tiny village of Georgioupolis, Lake Kournas has been described as a popular weekend getaway spot.
Ancient Aptera ruins can be found in Apokoronas and are free to the public from Tuesday to Sunday. Situated on a hill, these ruins are above the bay of Souda. When you visit the excavated Turkish fortress there, you will be awarded with a gorgeous view.
If a family vacation is what you seek, you may want to look into the visiting Almirida. With its wide, sandy beach and shallow waters, it is a perfect spot to relax with young children. Many of the villas in Apokoronas are perfect for the family, as well, since their balconies allow parents to supervise their children as they play in beautiful gardens. Nearby, the villages of Kalives and Plaka are growing as vacation locales, with their beautiful shorelines and stunning mountain views.
Another area of interest is Vamos, which is the capital of the district. This area has been preserved due to a project begun by the villagers in 1995. These villagers are trying to preserve the traditional livelihoods found in Vamos, and they are again showcasing the crafts and products of the region. Here you will be offered wine from a barrel, soap made from local oils, and many other hand-made items. Old buildings are being restored, using only traditional materials, and are being reopened as guest houses.
The last village is Vrysses, which only dates back to 1925. It is a rather sleepy town, with not much in the entertainment arena, but its beautiful setting and bubbling rivers that flow through make it a great area for a leisurely stroll.
Activity in Apokoronas is laid back and subtle. Taking guided hiking tours of the mountain regions and gorges are tourist favorites, as well as simple window shopping adventures in the various villages. Swimming and water sports (scuba diving, boating, wind-surfing, etc.) are popular at most of the beaches, and you can rent equipment like sea bikes at Lake Kournas. If a simple drink is what you crave, all the villages in Apokoronas will have a tavern or bar that will suit your need.
When you visit Apokoronas, you will definitely be assured a relaxing vacation. Pristine sights, lavish resort accommodations, and simple living make this area a wonderful spot for individuals, couples and families.
