Being a tourist location does not mean that Elounda is devoid of a meaningful history, however.  For those that like to dig a little deeper into the life and history of their host cities or towns, consider the historical city of Olous.  Some ruins of this ancient city are preserved on the peninsula, however much of the city was lost to the sea and can be seen by snorkelers and divers in the area.  There is also, within easy boating distance, the island of Spinaloga (Venetian for “long thorn”).  This rocky islet protected the city of Olous in days of old, and spent centuries as the defense of the Mirabello bay.  It later served as a refuge for Christians seeking to escape the Turks, and was eventually converted into a sanatorium for lepers until the year 1958.  The little island is now a piece of history with tours available to interested parties.
