Greece - Crete - Hersonissos

Available by the National Road, Hersonissos (Limenas Hersonissos) is a popular tourist destination if for no other reason than it remains open year around when many others close up shop as the normal tourist season ends.

Hersonissos was once a valued trading center that jutted out into the bay of Malia. This unique position also boasts many easily accessed ruins of Rome’s past dominance in the area.

Visitors also find the Lychnostatus Museum a perfect location to learn more about Cretan life and culture. Guests can see first hand the means of making a livelihood on this larger-than-life island.

Bus service is available, providing mass transit to visitors who do not wish to rent a car or bicyle during their stay. Mast shops and restaurants are open at any time of the year, but most hotel authorities recommend booking your stay well in advance as there are rarely any vacancies should you arrive without previous arrangements.

A Roman fountain is still a much sought after historical artifact that visitors enjoy as they see carvings that were made hundreds of years in the past. Various other Roman ruins can be found throughout Hersonissos including off shores ruins where the crystal clear waters allow you to see the beauty of the sea and remnants of a long deposed empire.

Since Hersonissos is a port city there is little in the way of beach, but as there is no port authority in the city, the waters are an attraction of most visitors who may utilize the waterways for sightseeing or fishing expeditions.

Mosaic tiles line the ruins of ancient Basilica ruins from the Byzantine era. These, too, are easily accessed and readily enjoyed by visitors.

Preserving Cretan culture for a new generation to see first hand is the common thread of virtually every resort in Crete, and Hersonissos is no exception. The common Greek language, culture and cuisine work to remove the everyday from the fabric or your vacation and bring you to place altogether new and wonderful.
