Greece - Crete - Kalives

Located on the island of Crete, Kalives is a Northern seaside village located approximately 17 kilometers from the city Chania.    Kalives is the epitome of a real Greek village and although it is populated with tourists, it is able to keep its original charm.  Kalives affords one the opportunity to enjoy the views of both the sea and the green landscape with the White Mountains in the distance. 

When visiting Kalives,  you’ll find many beautiful beaches to enjoy, including the Maistrali beach, which has a shallow area that is a wonderful place for younger children to enjoy the water.  On most of the beaches, you’ll find it easy to rent sun beds and umbrellas for the day.  Many enjoy snorkeling through the turquoise waters of the sea and experiencing some of the amazing marine life that Kalives has to offer. 

The wonderful aspect of Kalives when visiting is that it is very laid-back and most of all, real.  There is a Greek fishing atmosphere that has been retained, even though tourists do populate the area.  For those wanting a wild and lively nightlife, they will not find it in Kalives, although in the summer there is often a disco running and perhaps a few bars that stay open.  For most, however, Kalives seems to be more of a family vacation or for those wishing for a quiet and more relaxed atmosphere.  

For the tourist who wishes to shop, they will find many wonderful and amazing little shops in Kalives.  You’ll find many that will host more traditional Cretan products, such as herbs and pure olive oil, while others cater to the tourists with souvenirs.  Many markets are available to the consumer, as well as car rentals.  For those who wish to travel to the neighboring towns of Chania, Heraklio, and Rethimno, you’ll find bus transportation fitting to your needs. 

Kalives’ neighboring towns are a must see when visiting.  From museums to historical and archeological sites that are an important part of Greek history, you’ll find yourself enchanted with all that Crete has to offer for the tourist.  From cute little roadside cafes to the more historical taverns, you’ll find the Cretan food to be a wonderful experience, as well. 

When staying in Kalives, you’ll find the accommodations are suited to your needs, as well.  From the larger hotels, such as Kalyves Beach Hotel or Maistrali Hotel Apartments, you’ll find they will cater to your needs and, if preferred, there are many apartments and smaller family operated rooms that will afford one the opportunity of partaking in a friendly and relaxing atmosphere that is so much part of Kalives. 

While Kalives may not be the ideal spot to vacation for those who love a lively atmosphere, those who visit will find that their memories of their stay in Kalives will last a lifetime and be worth repeating in the future.
