Greece - Crete - Livadia

On the extreme western edge of Crete, lies the island of Paros, which is the home of the country town of Livadia. It is here that you can find the quiet little vacation spot that is the perfect place for those who just want to get away from it all, and enjoy the pace of the unhurried life. In our modern world that is in a constant rush, this could be the ideal spot to come away from it all and be thoroughly refreshed.

Livadia lies nestled on the western edge of the island, and has a beach area on the beautiful shore of the blue Mediterranean. The town, whose name means meadow, lies in a valley at the foot of some large hills that would make an excellent hiking trip, for those that love to walk in the outdoors. In the European walking trail E4, comes near to the town and would make an excellent activity, and will take you past some strange lava formations and other things worth seeing.

This town, though definitely out of the way, is the port city of the western side of the island. Along the shore is a beach with small pebbles and golden sand, as well as a small harbor for the village fisherman. The water offers an excellent opportunity to do some snorkeling and swimming. If you want to travel a little bit, to Elafonisi, you can find a pink beach and be able to snorkel and look at the coral there. Another possibility is to get in a little fishing by renting your own boat, or possibly even spend a little time with the fishermen on their boats.

Along the shore of this village, there are three tavernas where you can get your taste filled with excellent Cretan dishes. On this island, you can find that some of the dishes are a little different than on Crete itself - they have added some of their own local tastes to them. Typical fare at a tavernas (which means restaurant - not a tavern) will often include the following wonderful dishes: appetizers like spanokopita, saganaki and dolmades; a soup like avgolemeno; pastitsio for pasta; vegetable dishes like the well-known moussaka; sandwiches like gyros and souvlaki; sweets such as the tasty bakklava and loukomas; and then comes the main menus! So much to eat - homemade, and good, too!

Livadia offers a couple of places to stay that will make your visit there quite comfortable. There are a couple of villas on the hill that overlooks the town, the Livadia Sea View, and gives a beautiful view of the Mediterranean - and the sunset. The other villa, the Keramoti Villa, also offers a place to be able to enjoy your out of the way stay on the shores of the Mediterranean. Just about any modern convenience that you want can be found at either place, including a swimming pool, kitchens, and so much more.
