Platanias, Crete has, over the last few decades, transformed itself from a primarily agricultural society to a premier, cosmopolitan resort community.  Located approximately 10 kilometers from the city of Chania in Western Crete, Platanias Village offers everything the modern tourist could want.

The beaches are the main daytime attraction, but at night the village becomes lively and exciting in the many bars, restaurants and clubs.  Shopping for both traditional local products as well as souvenirs is abundant, along with clothing and jewelry stores.

Platanias Village boasts several hotels and there are always rooms to rent in private homes.  Car and motorbike rentals, along with banking services are also available within the boundaries of the village.  A doctor and pharmacy are both available for any health needs.

Platanias Village is alive with history dating before Venetian times.  Originally built high upon the bluffs overlooking the sea, the village proper is now located next to the mouth of the river, Platanias and the sea.  The old village still remains and is a popular tourist attraction.

From the village, the ancient island of St. Theodori seems to float just off the coastline.  Local legend says this island was created from the body of a sea monster that threatened the village.  Prayers from the villagers were answered when the monster became petrified and became the island.

Platanias serves as a starting point for other excursions into western Crete.  The village, as in all of Crete, offers around 200 days of beautiful, sunny Mediterranean vacation holidays for the old and young alike.  The locals are warm and friendly to all who visit, the food delicious and the atmosphere is always inviting.
