Greece - Crete - Rethymnon

Rethymnon is a city that lies along the northern shores of Crete.  The jewel of the city is a sandy beach that stretches to the east 12 kilometers and is one of the longest beach lines in all of Crete.  To the west of the city, a rocky coastline breaks into another large beach area after another 10 kilometers.

Rethymnon is an ancient city and is proud of its heritage.  Many of the buildings date back to the 16th century and remains of the Hellenic-Roman and Byzantine empires can be located within the ruins around the city.  A castle, built in 1590 to protect the city from pirates is still a main focal point and attraction.  It is believed that this castle was built upon the remains of an earlier structure that served the same purposes and was probably the acropolis of the 3rd century city of Rithymna.

The city believes in accommodating the needs of the visitor.  Rooms can be found in abundance including private homes and luxury hotels.  Nightlife can range from intense to peacefully pleasant in many of the local bars and clubs.  Those seeking the quiet of a moonlit night can find it at many of the seaside tavernas near the harbor.  Fresh fish, served in a variety of ways is always a specialty of any restaurant or eating establishment in the city.

Shopping includes every thing from needed personal items to local crafts and rare sponges.  Like all tourist destinations, souvenirs are readily available in numerous shops and markets.

Rethymnon is a city well suited for the traveler that loves history and being able to see, feel and touch the past come alive around them.  With the city’s many museums, mosques and other architecture from centuries gone by, the visitor to this unique Crete city can experience the best that the island has to offer.
