Sissi, Crete

Travelers to the island of Crete will find the town of Sissi a great place for relaxing and enjoying the sun and deep blue waters of the Mediterranean. Sissi is located on the north east side of Crete and is a nice change of pace from the hectic pace of some of the more frequented tourist attractions nearby. The reasons people flock to Crete is the incredible combination of the sea and sunny beaches along with the unique culture of the traditional nearby villages and small towns. Sissi is about 25 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos and 40 kilometers from Iraklion yet has a character of its own, with paths for hiking or biking and places to just sit and soak in the sun. After landing at the airport, drive through the Malia resort on the national highway and follow the sign to Sissi.

There are a wide range of rooms in Sissi, from small studio apartments to the larger more luxurious rooms of the main hotel which has a wonderful floral garden that has achieved local fame. There are various small places to eat and drink called Tavernas which is where local villagers eat. Sissi is renowned for the quality and quantity of fresh fish dishes created and served, many of the Cretans travel here just for that reason. The small hidden bay carved out by the endless washing of waves is one of the main reasons people come here; it was used to smuggle arms to rebel forces during the Cretan war.

One of the best ways to enjoy Sissi is to stay there and use it as a base for exploring other nearby areas such as the Milatos Cave with the tragedy it has and the Malia archeological site, offering remains from the Minoan Royal Palace. If you like exploring the older places of worship, visit the monastery of Saint George of Selinaris, dating from the 16th century. There are plenty of different things to do in the small secure town of Sissi, Crete and it is a great place to spend some time enjoying the waters, sun and sand of this part of Crete.
