Vamos, Crete
Vamos is situated in the heart of Apokoronas in the Northern part of Crete, and offers a very traditional way of life. This area of Crete is positioned below the White Mountains, and offers one of the greenest regions on the whole island. Although this area is made of many small villages, Vamos is the capital and the most popular for tourists to visit. Offering a relaxed and quaint holiday this area of Crete is ideal for visitors who want to simply sit back, and forget their hectic lifestyles.
Many of the buildings and houses in Vamos are being restored to their former glory, and the local government is investing heavily. However, they want to keep the village as traditional as possible, and ensure that the character is not lost. The history that surrounds Vamos and the neighbouring villages is very deep, and there are signs everywhere of the struggle the people of Apokoronas have had. Vamos is a very mountainous region surrounded by fruit producing trees, and local farms. Although there are only 800 inhabitants to this small village, they make all visitors feel very welcome.
The facilities in the village are basic, but adequate for visitors to enjoy, and explore. There is a shop, bakery, bank, post office, health center, and petrol station. Vamos has a very friendly feel to it, and wherever you go within the village the locals will greet you, and provide excellent customer service. Many of the traditional roads and buildings have been preserved well, and not adapted to suit the tourist industry. One of the most spectacular buildings in the area is the Karidi Monastery that overlooks 12 acres of olive groves, and the traditional olive press.
The beach of Almirada is the place where many locals and tourists alike spend long lazy days. There is very little wind along this stretch of the coast, and the waters are always inviting. There are several other beaches to explore, and you will be surprised how different they all are. Whether you want waves, and water sports, or sandy beaches with beach bars, and restaurants you will find a beach to suit your needs.
As well as the beaches the greatest attraction to visiting Vamos are the walking, cooking, and artist vacations on offer. You can join in with one of the many different courses, and trips that will teach you more about the amazing area of Vamos. You can enjoy, cook, and create incredible Cretan cuisine, and take your new found knowledge home with you. You will feel inspired to learn about the local produce, and how the people of
Crete cook with it. There are several different cafes, tavernas, and bars to enjoy the local food, and drink.
The village of Vamos is located within breath taking scenery, and it would be a shame not to explore it. You can enjoy the breath taking views of the White Mountains, and the crystal blue sea as you wander through the forests. This area of Crete is very diverse, and although it has remained traditional there is still plenty to see and do. Although Vamos will not suit everyone there is a huge amount of people who would benefit from this type of vacation. Once you have experienced life in Vamos you can go back to your hectic life feeling refreshed.
