Zaros

The Picturesque Mountain Village of Zaros, Crete

Zaros CreteZaros is situated on the southern slope of the mountain IDI on the idyllic island of Crete, and sits at an altitude of 340 meters. At the foot of the mountain is the town of Heraklion with Zaros being part of the municipal.  Zaros is a very traditional village that consists of olive farmers, and stock breeders alongside many skilled craftsmen.  There are several lakes in the vicinity which contribute to the local fishing of trout and salmon.  Although Zaros is situated on a mountain itself, the breath taking Mount Psiloritis overlooks the whole area.

This pretty village is famed for its amazing spring water that is bottled, and sold to the inhabitants all over the island. For thousands of years the natural springs in the village have produced the most amazing, clean, fresh spring water.  Within the village the ancient Roman aqua ducts and water channels can still be seen and explored.  These incredible aqua ducts would have once supplied the whole area of Gortina. This water supply caters for the whole village, so your morning shower will be under a cascade of fresh spring water.

Due to the springs in the village the area remains lush, and green throughout the whole year. This makes Zaros the ideal place for sightseeing, and exploring the local scenery.  Due to the central location Zaros is an excellent base to explore the rest of Crete, and you can easily use the public transport, or hire a car.  Although many people do choose to go off and explore, you will find that there is plenty to see and do within the village.

Whether you want to explore the historic monasteries, visit the breath taking lakes or simply sit back and enjoy the slower pace of life Zaros is the place to visit. Zaros is the perfect place if you enjoy trekking, climbing, and sightseeing.  The stunning Lake Votomos is a short distance from the village, and provides the perfect place to relax for the day.  Surrounded by the picturesque olive groves, and carob trees it is the ideal spot for a picnic.

The newly built dam is worth a visit to see the spectacular view from the top, and to experience the sheer enormity of the water. The water from the dam covered whole olive groves, almond orchards, and a church. If you look closely you may see some of the olive trees still growing through the water. Moving back to the village you will find that Zaros is full of charm, and the local people will welcome visitors with open arms.

There is a folk craft shop that not only sells local produce, but the owner will demonstrate to you how to make the goods. There is also a fantastic music store selling traditional Cretan instruments, and a quaint lavender shop that sells honey, herbs, and olive oil.  The Vegerra Taverna is in the heart of the village, and offers incredible cuisine served in the traditional Cretan way. No matter what type of food you enjoy there will something served to you that are delicious on every occasion that you dine there.  Zaros provides everything you need for an amazing relaxing vacation that is ideal for families, and people looking to escape everything.
